Parliament's Impeachment Committee is set to meet later this week to consider its draft terms of reference and discuss the process for appointing evidence leaders as it prepares for its work.
The meeting comes as Parliament is expected to formally file papers in the Western Cape High Court indicating that it will abide by the court's ruling on an urgent interdict application brought by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The President is seeking to halt the committee's proceedings while a judicial review of the Section 89 report is underway.
National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has indicated that she will submit an explanatory affidavit together with the committee's opposing papers.
The court challenge has sparked debate within the committee over whether its members should actively oppose the President's application.
Committee chairperson Makashule Gana said last week that he would oppose the interdict if Didiza chose not to do so, noting that he is cited as a respondent in the court papers.
Gana's position has reportedly received the backing of most political parties represented on the committee.
The outcome of the court application is expected to have a significant bearing on the committee's ability to proceed with its work as Parliament navigates one of its most consequential constitutional processes.
