An investigation has been launched following the death of a 69-year-old Canadian tourist who was allegedly accidentally shot at the Kruger National Park on Wednesday night.

South African National Parks (SANParks) said the incident occurred at a concession-operated picnic area near the Phabeni Gate during a bush braai hosted by a private concession operator with a valid permit to operate within the park.

According to SANParks, the tourist was part of a group that had been booked outside the park and entered specifically to attend the evening event.

It is understood that a private guide affiliated with the concession operator allegedly accidentally discharged a firearm, fatally wounding the guest.

SANParks confirmed that the deceased was a Canadian national and said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.

"The visitor was part of a group attending a bush braai hosted by a private concession operator with a valid permit," SANParks said in a statement.

Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the firearm involved or whether any charges have been laid.

The incident has raised questions about safety protocols at privately operated events within the park, with SANParks expected to work closely with law enforcement as the investigation continues.
