A Durban Metro Police officer has been suspended and is under investigation after allegedly taking money from members of the public while falsely promising them jobs within the Metro Police Service.

The officer, who was arrested last week, is facing allegations of corruption after reportedly claiming he could secure employment opportunities for individuals in exchange for payment.

Durban Metro Police spokesperson, Boysie Zungu, confirmed that the officer has been suspended pending the outcome of both the criminal investigation and internal disciplinary proceedings.

Zungu said the Metro Police would cooperate fully with law enforcement authorities to ensure the matter is thoroughly investigated and that appropriate action is taken if wrongdoing is proven.

"The officer appeared in Durban Magistrate's Court on Friday and was released on bail," Zungu said.

Authorities have not disclosed how many people may have been affected by the alleged scheme or the amount of money involved.

The investigation is ongoing.
