Two KwaZulu-Natal police officers have been arrested on corruption charges after allegedly demanding R1 000 from a suspect as bail money ahead of his court appearance in Pietermaritzburg.

The arrests were carried out by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit following a complaint lodged by the suspect, who later questioned what had happened to the money after he was released by the court.

According to KwaZulu-Natal police, the complainant was advised to open a corruption case, prompting an investigation into the officers’ conduct.

Police spokesperson Paul Magwaza said one of the officers later attempted to return the money and persuade the complainant to withdraw the case.

“On Friday, 22 May 2026, one of the police officers proceeded to the complainant’s workplace to pay back the R1 000 and asked him to withdraw the corruption case against him and his colleague,” said Magwaza.

“The complainant refused to take the money from the police officer. The Provincial Anti-Corruption members arrested the two officers and charged them with corruption.”

The two officers are expected to appear in court on corruption-related charges as investigations continue.
