More than 100 shacks were destroyed in a devastating fire that swept through the Plastic View informal settlement in the City of Tshwane on Thursday night.

Emergency services remain on the scene as search operations continue to ensure that all residents have been accounted for.

The latest blaze comes just days after another shack fire at the same settlement claimed the life of a man on May 24.

City of Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Nana Radebe-Kgiba said firefighters were still battling the flames while teams prepared to conduct search and recovery operations.

“We are still going to do search and recovery after we are done with firefighting operations. The cause of the fire will be determined once firefighting operations have been completed,” said Radebe-Kgiba.

No fatalities or injuries have been reported at this stage.

The cause of the fire remains unknown and will be investigated once the scene has been declared safe.
