A mother and her child have died following an accident involving a vehicle transporting Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi on the N1 near Bela-Bela in Limpopo.
The incident occurred on Saturday, 9 May 2026, with the vehicle reportedly being driven by a member of the Protection Security Services.
According to Athlenda Mathe, the woman had been crossing the road with her two children, one of whom was strapped to her back, when the collision occurred.
Police say she was attempting to reach the scene of another accident involving her husband, who had allegedly been struck and killed by a vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer.
“He was allegedly struck by a vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer and died at the scene,” Mathe said.
Mathe added that Minister Motsoaledi, his close protection officer and the driver stopped immediately after the incident and remained at the scene until emergency services and police arrived.
“Statements were subsequently obtained from those present at the scene,” she said.
The South African Police Service has opened two separate culpable homicide investigations relating to the incidents.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has since taken over the investigation because both drivers involved are SAPS members.
