The South African Weather Service has issued a warning for widespread cold temperatures and strong winds expected to impact large parts of the country this week.
The approaching low-pressure system is set to affect the Western Cape, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape first, before moving into central and eastern regions. Forecasters say the system could bring snowfall to high-lying areas.
Authorities have also warned of severe thunderstorms in the Free State and North West, with a heightened risk of flooding.
Weather forecaster Tokelo Chiloane says conditions are expected to deteriorate as the week progresses.
“By Tuesday and Wednesday, the rain will spread into the central and eastern provinces, bringing a marked increase in wet and cold conditions,” Chiloane said.
The weather service has warned of disruptive rainfall that may lead to flooding in parts of the Western and Eastern Cape, along with damaging coastal winds and waves. Snowfall is also expected to disrupt high-lying areas across the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape.
Chiloane added that severe thunderstorms are likely in the Free State and North West, where significant weather-related impacts were already recorded last week.
Residents are urged to remain alert, monitor official weather updates and take necessary precautions as conditions are expected to worsen.
