The South African Weather Service has issued a warning for a significant drop in temperatures accompanied by strong winds, expected to affect large parts of the country from Tuesday through Thursday.

The cold front is expected to first impact the Western, Northern and Eastern Cape before moving into central and eastern provinces later in the week.

Forecasters have also warned of possible snowfall in high-lying areas, along with disruptive weather conditions across several regions.

Severe thunderstorms are forecast for the Free State and North West, with authorities cautioning that flooding remains a key risk in affected areas.

Weather forecaster Tokelo Chiloane said rainfall will intensify midweek as the system spreads inland.

“By Tuesday and Wednesday, the rain will spread into the central and eastern provinces, bringing a marked increase in wet and cold conditions. The South African Weather Service warns of disruptive rainfall that may lead to flooding over the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, damaging winds and waves along the coastline, and disruptive snowfall over high-lying areas of the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and the Northern Cape, as observed last week,” Chiloane said.

He added that severe thunderstorms are also expected over the Free State and North West, regions that experienced similar impacts in recent days.

Residents across affected provinces have been urged to monitor official weather updates and take precautionary measures as conditions are expected to deteriorate.
