Residents and businesses in several northern parts of eThekwini are experiencing water shortages following an interruption to supply linked to low storage levels at a key treatment facility.

eThekwini Municipality confirmed on Friday that the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works, operated by uMngeni-uThukela Water, is currently facing reduced storage capacity.

Officials said the situation has been exacerbated by increased water demand across the city, leading to a drop in supply through the Northern Aqueduct system. As a result, high-lying areas have been hardest hit by the disruptions.

The municipality has requested uMngeni-uThukela Water to investigate the cause of the low storage levels.

Water supply is expected to gradually return to normal once storage levels at the treatment plant improve and stabilise.

Residents and businesses have been urged to use water sparingly to help restore supply levels.

Areas affected include Newlands 3, parts of KwaMashu, Aloes, South Gate, Phoenix 2 and 4, Mount Moriah, Sea Cow Lake, Effingham, Sunningdale and Mount View.

The municipality has apologised for the inconvenience and encouraged residents to report water-related issues via its mobile app, WhatsApp line, or customer care call centre.
