Two suspects have been shot and killed during a confrontation with police in the Kennedy Road informal settlement in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
According to authorities, the men were wanted in connection with a series of armed robberies reported along the N2 and M19 freeways. The incident comes shortly after the arrest of another suspect believed to be linked to the same criminal group.
Robert Netshiunda, speaking on behalf of the South African Police Service in KwaZulu-Natal, said officers tracked the suspects to a shack in the area following intelligence-led investigations.
“Follow-up investigations led the police to a shack at Kennedy Road informal settlement, where two wanted suspects were hiding. During the operation, a shootout ensued between the police and the suspects. Two suspects were shot and fatally wounded during the shootout. Two firearms were found in their possession. Police officers were not injured,” Netshiunda said.
Two firearms were recovered at the scene, and investigations into the wider robbery network are continuing.
