The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that public schools will remain open from 28 to 30 April, urging parents and learners to disregard false claims circulating on social media suggesting a nationwide shutdown.

In a statement, the department said it had taken note of misleading posts alleging that schools would close on Tuesday, 28 April, Wednesday, 29 April, and Thursday, 30 April. Officials stressed that the dates form part of the normal second school term and are not public holidays or scheduled breaks.

The DBE confirmed that teaching and learning will continue as normal in line with the officially approved 2026 school calendar. The second term runs from 8 April to 26 June 2026, during which all public schools are expected to operate without interruption.

Authorities have warned that the spread of misinformation can disrupt academic activities, affect attendance, and create unnecessary confusion among parents, learners, and educators.

The department has called on the public to verify information before sharing it and to rely only on official government communication channels for accurate details regarding school calendars and related updates.

Officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining a stable academic programme and ensuring that learners remain in class as scheduled, despite the circulation of false claims online.
