One suspect has been killed and another wounded following a shootout with police in Rabie Ridge, north of Johannesburg, on Thursday night.
According to police, the confrontation occurred after officers responded to an attempted business robbery in Midrand. The suspects allegedly fled the scene in a vehicle when police arrived, prompting a chase.
Gauteng police spokesperson Tintswalo Sibeko said the pursuit ended in Klipfontein View, Rabie Ridge, where an exchange of gunfire took place.
“The vehicle eventually stopped at Klipfontein View, Rabie Ridge. One suspect was fatally wounded, while another sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment under police guard,” Sibeko said.
She added that a third suspect managed to escape on foot and remains at large.
Police recovered two unlicensed firearms and ammunition from the suspects’ vehicle. The serial numbers on the weapons had been filed off.
Investigations are ongoing.
