An infant believed to be less than a month old has died following a head-on collision on the M35 in Folweni, south of Durban.
Emergency services responded to the scene on Sunday, where they found two severely damaged vehicles blocking the roadway. Both drivers, a man and a woman, were trapped inside the wreckage and required extrication.
According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garreth Jamieson, firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to free the injured motorists.
“Paramedics found a baby, believed to be less than a month old, had also been involved in the collision and, unfortunately, suffered major fatal injuries and was declared deceased on the scene,” Jamieson said.
He added that the circumstances leading up to the crash remain unclear at this stage.
Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Metro Police were present at the scene, and an investigation into the cause of the collision is underway.
