Funerals are set to take place on Thursday for nine victims of a school shooting in southern Turkey, where a 14-year-old opened fire, sending shockwaves across the nation.
The attack occurred in the province of Kahramanmaras and marks the second such incident in the country this week, where school shootings remain rare.
Local authorities confirmed that those killed include eight children aged between 10 and 11, as well as a 55-year-old teacher.
Police investigations have revealed that the teenage suspect had referenced Elliot Rodger in a WhatsApp profile image. Rodger carried out a deadly attack in 2014 in the United States, killing six people near the University of California, Santa Barbara before taking his own life.
In a statement, police said initial findings indicate the suspect’s online activity included imagery linked to Rodger, though no broader connections have been established.
The teenage gunman died at the scene, although authorities have not yet clarified the circumstances surrounding his death.
Police also confirmed the arrest of the suspect’s father, a former police inspector, who was taken into custody on Wednesday. Digital devices seized from the family home and vehicle are currently being analysed as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities have stated that, based on preliminary findings, there is no indication of a link to terrorism and the incident is believed to be an isolated act.
The tragedy has sparked renewed concern over youth violence, as the country mourns the loss of young lives.
