KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma has announced the deployment of more than 3,000 law enforcement officers across the province in a bid to curb road fatalities during the busy Easter long weekend.

The announcement was made during the launch of the Easter Holiday Road Safety Campaign at uMdloti, north of Durban, where authorities also conducted inspections of public transport vehicles to ensure compliance with roadworthiness standards.

Duma said a coordinated, multi-agency approach would be implemented, with increased visibility on major routes throughout the province.

“We will have a strong presence across KwaZulu-Natal, from Kokstad to Port Edward, Pongola, Golela and Harrismith, to ensure road users are safe,” he said.

He added that various law enforcement bodies, including metro police, the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Border Management Authority (BMA), and the Department of Home Affairs, will work together during the period.

Authorities have adopted a zero-tolerance stance on traffic violations, particularly drunk driving, which Duma described as a serious criminal offence.

“We have already begun inspections and checked 17 public transport vehicles, including taxis and buses. Four were found to be unroadworthy,” he said.

Duma warned motorists that intensified roadblocks and law enforcement operations will be conducted throughout the Easter period.

“Motorists must adhere to the rules of the road or face arrest. Vehicles that are not roadworthy will be dealt with accordingly,” he said.

The campaign forms part of broader efforts to reduce accidents and fatalities on KwaZulu-Natal’s roads during peak travel periods.
