A man has been critically injured and airlifted to hospital after his car collided with a truck on the N3 in western Durban on Friday.

According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, the crash occurred shortly after the Pavilion off-ramp when the car apparently slammed into the rear of a truck.

The circumstances leading up to the collision remain unclear.

Jamieson said emergency services had to temporarily close the freeway to allow a medical helicopter to land and transport the injured driver.

Rescue teams from the fire department used specialised equipment to free the man from the wreckage before paramedics stabilised him at the scene.

“He was cut free from the wreckage by the fire department and stabilised before being placed on a ventilator at the scene,” Jamieson said.

The patient was then transported by a Netcare 911 medical helicopter to a Level 1 trauma facility for urgent treatment.
