The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry is set to hear evidence on Tuesday from a witness whose testimony was postponed last week after his legal representative requested additional time to prepare.

The witness was initially scheduled to appear on Friday, but his counsel, Hartley Ngoato, told the commission he had not received the relevant documents in time to adequately consult with his client.

Ngoato said the material provided by the evidence leaders exceeded 4,000 pages, requiring further time for review and preparation.

He submitted two applications to the commission — one seeking a postponement of proceedings and another requesting that parts of his client’s testimony be heard in camera, meaning behind closed doors.

Arguing that proper consultation would take six days, Ngoato asked for an extended delay. While both applications were granted, Commission chairperson Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga declined to allow the full six days requested.

Justice Madlanga also ruled that the identity of the witness would remain confidential.

The commission continues its work probing allegations within its mandate, with proceedings resuming this week.
