The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) will investigate allegations of maladministration at the uMzinyathi District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced.

The probe will focus on the municipality’s procurement and contracting processes, including the supply, installation, and maintenance of ground dual static tanks and fuel, as well as the lease and subsequent purchase of a generator for the Vants Drift Water Treatment Plant in Nquthu.

The investigation, covering the period from 1 March 2020 to 21 November 2025, will examine whether these contracts and payments were conducted in an unfair, uncompetitive, opaque, inequitable, or cost-ineffective manner.

SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the inquiry will look into “serious maladministration; misconduct by officials or employees; illegal appropriation or spending of public funds or assets; and irregular acts involving state property.”

Any evidence of criminal conduct uncovered during the investigation will be referred to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for further action.
