At least 12 children have been killed and five others critically injured in a scholar transport crash in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, on Monday morning.
Details surrounding the incident remain limited,its understood that the learners were travelling in a private scholar transport vehicle at the time of the crash.
Gauteng MEC for Education Matome Chiloane is expected to visit the scene as authorities continue to manage the aftermath of the tragedy.
Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said preliminary information indicated that 11 learners died at the scene, while five others who sustained critical injuries were rushed to hospital for urgent medical care.
“At this stage, the scene remains active and emergency services are still attending to the incident. Further verified details will be shared in due course as information becomes available,” Mabona said.
The cause of the crash is yet to be determined, and investigations are underway.
