President Cyril Ramaphosa has received the interim report of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into allegations of criminality, political interference and corruption within the criminal justice system.

The development was confirmed by Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya, who said the handover comes three months after KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi testified before the Commission at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College in September.

Magwenya said the President will now study the interim findings while the Commission, currently in recess, prepares to resume hearings to consider further evidence from new witnesses, as well as from individuals who have previously testified.

“President Ramaphosa has expressed his appreciation for the interim report and his expectation that the Commission will, in line with its terms of reference, refer any actions believed to constitute criminal conduct for prosecution,” Magwenya said.

To date, the Madlanga Commission has heard testimony from 37 witnesses over 45 days of hearings, which included public, partially public and one in-camera session.

While the interim report is expected to provide an indication of the nature and extent of challenges facing the criminal justice system, its contents will not be released to the public.
