A man wanted in connection with a string of serious crimes, including multiple murders, was killed in a shootout with police in the Durban CBD on Monday afternoon.
KwaZulu-Natal police confirmed the incident occurred near Maydon Wharf after officers received intelligence that the suspect was travelling towards the city centre. The information was acted upon by SAPS members, supported by Metro Police officers.
KZN SAPS spokesperson Paul Magwaza said police identified the minibus taxi in which the suspect was travelling and attempted to intercept it.
“Before officers could stop the vehicle, the minibus taxi drove straight towards the police while shots were fired at them. Police returned fire, and the suspect was fatally wounded,” Magwaza said.
The suspect has been linked to several cases reported this month, including the murder of four people in Mbumbulu and a cash-in-transit robbery in Umlazi, south of Durban.
Two pistols were recovered at the scene. One firearm was found in the suspect’s possession, while another was recovered inside the minibus taxi. A case of attempted murder of police officers has been opened at the Maydon Wharf Police Station.
