Mpumalanga police have opened two counts of murder following the discovery of the decomposed bodies of two women at a house in KaMagugu, on the outskirts of the Mbombela CBD.
The grim find was made after neighbours raised the alarm, reporting a strong foul smell and an unusual number of flies gathering on the windows of the house. Attempts to contact the homeowner were unsuccessful, with calls reportedly going unanswered and diverted to voicemail.
Police were subsequently dispatched to the scene, where the bodies were discovered inside the residence.
Provincial police spokesperson Jabu Ndubane confirmed that the victims were a 64-year-old woman and a 20-year-old woman. He said preliminary investigations indicate that the two were murdered.
Ndubane added that it is still unclear whether any items were stolen from the house, and investigations are ongoing.
