KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli is facing a crucial test as the provincial legislature prepares to vote on a motion of no confidence in his leadership.
The motion was brought by the MK Party and is being supported by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). However, Ntuli, who represents the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), says he is unfazed by the challenge.
Ntuli was appointed Premier through a coalition government comprising the IFP, ANC, DA and the National Freedom Party (NFP). The coalition’s stability has since been weakened following the NFP’s exit from government, leaving the alliance with just half of the seats in the provincial legislature.
To successfully remove the Premier, opposition parties will need a majority of 50 percent plus one vote.
The outcome of the vote is expected to determine the future of the current coalition government in KwaZulu-Natal.
