City of Ekurhuleni Human Resources Head Linda Gxasheka has been suspended, becoming the latest senior official to face action amid mounting allegations of misconduct within the municipality.

Her suspension comes just nine days after the metro’s head of legal services, Kemi Behari, was placed on precautionary leave.

Gxasheka was implicated during testimony before the Madlanga Commission, where former employee relations head Xolani Nciza accused her of failing to take disciplinary action against Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi. An Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) report had recommended action against Mkhwanazi for allegedly entering into a corrupt contract with businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s private security company.

According to evidence before the commission, retired city manager Dr Imogen Mashazi, Behari and Gxasheka allegedly failed to implement the recommended disciplinary measures.

It also emerged that both Behari and Gxasheka received salary increases during the period in question.

The City has not yet indicated when disciplinary proceedings will commence.
