Nineteen taxi operators have been arrested in connection with ongoing violence along the Malamulele–Giyani route in Limpopo. The group is expected to appear in a local magistrate’s court on Thursday.
Police say the suspects are linked to several cases, including intimidation, robbery and assault. The arrests follow months of conflict between rival taxi associations vying for control of the lucrative route, with tensions escalating since October.
Provincial police spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba confirmed the developments, warning that authorities will not hesitate to act against those fueling instability.
“Lawlessness will never be tolerated, regardless of who is involved. We will deal decisively with anyone who engages in acts of violence, especially during this festive season when our communities rely heavily on public transport,” said Mashaba.
Police operations in the area are expected to continue as efforts intensify to restore order and ensure the safety of commuters.
