The eThekwini Municipality has temporarily closed Umhlanga Main Beach and Bronze Beach after a failure at the Ohlange Wastewater Pump Station led to contamination concerns.
According to municipal officials, the breakdown was caused by rags and other household waste clogging the pumps. The city released a video showing workers removing the debris responsible for the malfunction, describing the incident as yet another example of ongoing abuse of sewer infrastructure.
Repair teams are continuing efforts to fully clear the blockage and restore normal operations.
In the meantime, authorities say 21 other beaches across eThekwini remain open and safe for swimming.
