Nine initiates have died in the Eastern Cape since the start of the summer initiation season, prompting renewed alarm over safety conditions at traditional schools.
Survivors have described harrowing experiences, including severe hunger and intimidation, with armed criminals reportedly targeting young boys tasked with delivering food and supplies to the camps.
In response, the Kwanobuhle Initiation Task Team comprising traditional leaders, health officials, police, religious representatives and members of the taxi industry conducted oversight visits to identified hotspot areas in an effort to stabilise the situation.
Authorities have confirmed that 24 suspects have been arrested in connection with the deaths. Investigations are ongoing as officials work to prevent further loss of life and restore safety to the initiation process.
