The Eastern Cape has recorded a concerning increase in drownings since early December, including the recent deaths of two teenagers from Mqanduli at a local dam.

Authorities and residents are warning that a shortage of lifeguards on Wild Coast beaches is putting visitors at risk during the peak holiday season. Only six lifeguards remain to patrol three popular stretches of coastline, raising concerns about safety as families flock to the beaches.

Resident Richard Warren-Smith emphasised the importance of ensuring visitor safety. “It’s vital to their holiday, and they feel at ease when they’re on the beaches,” he said.

Local officials are calling for increased resources to protect beachgoers and prevent further tragedies.
