eThekwini Municipality has moved to clear up confusion after a widely circulated video appeared to show a gas explosion in the Durban CBD. In a statement, the City confirmed the incident was caused by electrical cable arcing  not a gas leak or blast.

The event occurred at the corner of Dorothy Nyembe and Anton Lembede streets. Cable arcing happens when electricity jumps between damaged conductors, creating a spark or visible flare.

According to the municipality, the flash seen in the video was the result of minor cable damage, not deteriorating infrastructure.

No injuries, fatalities or power disruptions were reported, and the City’s energy management team quickly contained the situation.
