Plessislaer police are searching for two suspects who shot a security guard during an early-morning robbery at a Pietermaritzburg health facility on Sunday. Two guards were held at gunpoint at the Caluza Clinic, police said.
According to police spokesperson Ntathu Ndlovu, one suspect feigned illness to gain entry to the clinic. “As soon as the security guard opened for him, the second suspect approached. The two robbed the guard at gunpoint. The other security guard refused to hand over his belongings and was shot at. No arrests have been made,” Ndlovu said.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health reported that the injured security guard sustained multiple gunshot wounds, is in critical condition, and underwent emergency surgery.
Health spokesperson Nathi Olifant condemned the attack, saying targeting health workers and security staff undermines the entire health system and the safety of the community.
MEC Nomagugu Simelane described the incident as “senseless, heartless, and a direct attack on the right of communities to access healthcare safely” and called on law enforcement to swiftly apprehend those responsible.
