Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha has raised concerns over the economic impact of a shutdown by taxi operators in Ngcobo, where services came to a standstill amid growing tensions within the transport sector.

Taxi associations halted operations this week, accusing long-distance bus companies of encroaching on their routes and claiming that some operators are running without valid permits. They also allege that law enforcement has failed to intervene.

Nqatha said the transport department will escalate the grievances raised by taxi operators but emphasised that disruptions of this nature cannot continue. He cautioned that the industry cannot “deprive communities of essential services” or operate as though it is beyond legal accountability.

Taxi services are expected to resume on Thursday.
