Management at the Clare Estate Hindu Crematorium has moved to clarify the stricter guidelines introduced earlier this year, saying the measures were implemented to curb growing incidents of inappropriate behaviour on the premises.
The updated rules include tighter controls on live-streaming, a ban on alcohol, and restrictions on cooked meals being brought onto the property. According to Pradeep Ramlall of the Clare Estate Crematorium Society, the changes followed a surge in complaints about littering and “picnic-style” gatherings during funerals.
Ramlall said the guidelines, which have been in effect since January, were introduced to protect the sanctity of funeral proceedings. He added that much of the public backlash was fuelled by misinformation.
“These mischief makers took it out of context and spread misinformation that we are denying people food that is absolutely wrong,” he said. “We understand there are people who are ill, fasting, or diabetic, and we remain compassionate. But the defamatory comments on social media are completely unacceptable.”
The South African Hindu Maha Sabha has backed the revised rules, saying they are necessary to uphold dignity and ensure that rituals remain aligned with Hindu scripture.
