The Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein is set to hear an appeal by the African National Congress (ANC) challenging the use of the MK Party’s name and logo.

The dispute dates back to the lead-up to the 2024 General Elections, when the ANC unsuccessfully sought to prevent the MK Party from using the branding through a Durban High Court application. Judge Mahendra Chetty dismissed the case but later granted the ANC permission to appeal.

In a statement, the ANC said the case is about protecting a heritage forged through “sacrifice, discipline and unwavering commitment to the struggle for freedom.”

The MK Party, in turn, described the appeal on Thursday as “an act of desperation” and accused the ANC of refusing to acknowledge that it no longer represents the aspirations of the people.
