The Hawks have seized counterfeit alcohol worth an estimated R400,000 during a targeted operation in the City of Ekurhuleni, as authorities ramp up efforts to curb the circulation of illegal liquor nationwide.
Officials warn that counterfeit alcohol remains a significant threat to public health and safety, with many illicit products containing hazardous substances.
The operation focused on three properties in Germiston, Boksburg, and Edenvale after investigators secured search and seizure warrants. It followed earlier test purchases that confirmed the presence of fake liquor being distributed in the region.
During the raids, officers uncovered a range of illicit alcohol products and counterfeit cigarettes, many packaged under well-known brand names.
All seized items have been transported to a designated depot for further analysis. Authorities say three case dockets will be opened as the investigation continues.
