The mother of 11-year-old Jayden-Lee Meek has been formally charged with his murder, sparking shock and devastation across the Fleurhof community.
Tiffany Nicole Meek, 31, was arrested on Friday and appeared briefly in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, where her case was postponed to this coming Friday. She faces multiple charges, including murder, defeating the ends of justice, crimen injuria, and obstruction of justice.
Jayden-Lee was reported missing by his mother on Tuesday, May 12. He was found the next morning, half-naked and unconscious on the staircase of the complex where he lived. He was rushed to Discovery Hospital but was declared dead shortly after arrival.
Deputy Police Minister Polly Boshielo confirmed the charges and indicated that further arrests are likely.
“This case is deeply tragic. It involves a young boy and his own mother, which makes it all the more heartbreaking. We are committed to ensuring justice is served and will be monitoring the investigation closely. Additional arrests cannot be ruled out,” Boshielo said.
Community outrage has been mounting, particularly in Fleurhof, where residents initially rallied behind Meek after Jayden's disappearance. The news of her arrest has reopened wounds for many.
Community leader June Phillip expressed the collective grief:
“The community is devastated. We supported the mother and family—only to learn she was arrested for this horrific act. There is also frustration. Had police acted more swiftly when she reported him missing, maybe Jayden could have been found alive.”
Fellow community leader Riona Coetzee believes Meek did not act alone.
“I don’t think she was the only one involved. More arrests are coming, and they’re going to shock us. It’s painful because no matter how many people are brought to justice, nothing will bring Jayden back.”
As the investigation continues, Fleurhof remains a community in mourning, grappling with betrayal and a desperate need for answers in the wake of an unthinkable tragedy.
