The inquest into the deaths of 21 teenagers at the Enyobeni Tavern is set to continue in the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court, as tavern manager Siyakhangela Ndevu returns to the witness stand for a third day.
The proceedings aim to determine whether anyone can be held legally responsible for the tragic incident, which occurred in 2022 at the popular tavern in Scenery Park, East London.
Ndevu has come under scrutiny during cross-examination by legal representatives of the victims’ families and his former employee, Thembisa Diko. He testified that he was unaware that, under municipal bylaws, he was responsible for ensuring the safety of patrons.
Meanwhile, bereaved families have expressed frustration over delays in the inquest, which has now stretched over three years. The victims were recently honoured in a candlelight memorial service at St. Peter’s Methodist Church in Scenery Park.
The inquest continues.
