Ten suspects, among them police officers and a traffic official, are set to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday facing serious charges of theft, fraud, extortion, and corruption.
The group was arrested earlier this week following allegations that approximately R900,000 was stolen from a store during a police operation at Dragon City Mall in central Johannesburg on Monday. Authorities say only a portion of the cash seized was officially declared.
Hawks spokesperson Thandi Mbambo confirmed that the store owner reported the alleged theft to investigators, prompting a swift response.
“Preliminary investigations led the Hawks to Newtown, where several vehicles were searched. A significant amount of cash was recovered from one of the vehicles,” Mbambo stated.
She added that further probes linked four more officials to the crime scene. These individuals were subsequently arrested and will join their six co-accused in court on Friday, 4 July 2025.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
