KwaDukuza police have launched a murder investigation following the tragic death of municipal official Nokulunga Mashabane, who was found fatally shot in her car during a routine police patrol in the Darnall area on Friday.

The 31-year-old, who served as the inter-departmental relations manager in the KwaDukuza Mayor’s Office for six years, was discovered inside a white vehicle parked on the roadside. Officers noticed the car with its headlights on and the passenger door open before finding Mashabane in the driver’s seat with gunshot wounds.

Municipal spokesperson Sifiso Zulu described her death as a devastating loss.
“It is unfortunate that such a gentle person was met with such cruelty. Everyone who encountered her would attest to her professionalism and respectful nature. Her passing has sent shockwaves through the institution,” he said.

The motive behind the killing remains unclear, and no arrests have been made.

Meanwhile, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in KwaZulu-Natal have called for full transparency in the investigation. Provincial spokesperson Chris Msibi condemned the incident as a brutal murder and urged authorities to act decisively against gender-based violence and rising crime in the province.

“We extend our condolences to the family and everyone affected by this gruesome incident. We will do everything possible to support the pursuit of justice,” said Msibi.

Police are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in the investigation.
