Large parts of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal remain under severe weather alerts this week, as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) warns that cold conditions, snow, and disruptive rain are expected to persist.

In the Eastern Cape, an Orange Level 6 warning has been issued for disruptive snowfall in areas including the Joe Gqabi District, Molteno, and Matatiele. Additionally, heavy rainfall warnings have been activated across several municipalities, with a Level 5 alert issued for Buffalo City Metro, OR Tambo, Amathole, and surrounding districts — all facing the risk of localised flooding.

SAWS forecaster Ayabonga Tshungwana confirmed that while the precipitation is expected to subside by Tuesday, cold temperatures will linger through to Wednesday.
"The snowfall is likely to stop by Tuesday, but cold conditions will continue until midweek," said Tshungwana.

Meanwhile, in KwaZulu-Natal, authorities are bracing for worsening winter weather. The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) has placed disaster management teams on high alert, particularly in the Midlands and areas surrounding the Drakensberg.

Snow in Kokstad has already led to significant road closures. The provincial Department of Transport has shut down the R617 between Kokstad and Pietermaritzburg, as well as parts of the N2. Motorists have been urged to delay travel, as stranded trucks have caused major traffic congestion.

KwaZulu-Natal is also under multiple weather warnings, including a Level 2 alert for snow, and a Level 4 warning for damaging coastal winds and strong waves — potentially affecting small harbours, marine activities, and beachfront safety.

COGTA spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said preparations are in place to respond swiftly to any emergencies.
“Snow is expected in the uThukela, Harry Gwala, and parts of the Ugu districts,” said Mzila. “The MEC has instructed all disaster management teams to remain on standby and to implement contingency measures as the situation develops.”

Residents in affected areas are urged to follow official advisories, avoid unnecessary travel, and take precautions against the extreme cold.
