As South Africa braces for a week of freezing temperatures and thunderstorm warnings, Eskom has assured the public that it is adequately prepared to meet increased electricity demand.

The power utility confirmed that emergency reserves are in place and are being strategically deployed throughout the week to support the national grid during this period of extreme weather.

In a bid to further stabilise the electricity supply, Eskom plans to return 2,550 megawatts of generation capacity to service ahead of this evening’s peak demand.

Additionally, Medupi Power Station’s Unit 4, which has been out of commission since a major incident in 2021, is nearing completion of its recovery process. Once operational, the unit is expected to contribute 800 megawatts to the grid and is scheduled to be back online next month.

Eskom says it remains on high alert and will continue to monitor both demand and weather conditions closely as South Africa endures a particularly harsh winter spell.
