The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has issued a warning that social grant payments to approximately 184,000 beneficiaries in KwaZulu-Natal may be delayed next month due to non-disclosure of income.
The agency revealed that a nationwide audit uncovered around 210,000 beneficiaries who may have violated the Social Assistance Act by failing to declare additional sources of income during their application process. These irregularities were flagged through data-sharing partnerships with registered credit bureaus.
SASSA’s KwaZulu-Natal provincial head, Thamo Mzobe, said the highest concentration of questionable cases was detected in Chatsworth, Phoenix, and eThekwini Central.
“This grant is intended for the poor and those without income. When irregularities are found, we invite the individuals for a review to verify their eligibility,” said Mzobe.
He added that SASSA sampled one million beneficiaries nationwide, of which 210,000 were found to be in breach of grant eligibility requirements.
The agency has urged affected beneficiaries to respond promptly to requests for eligibility reviews to avoid suspension or delays in future payments.
