Authorities are working to uncover the cause of a fatal bus crash that claimed three lives and left 12 people injured early Tuesday morning on the R102 near the Tongaat River Bridge.

The 30-seater bus plunged off the bridge under still-unclear circumstances, prompting a massive emergency response. Search and rescue teams set up a rope-and-pulley system to retrieve the injured from the riverbank below.

Three women died at the scene, while the remaining passengers sustained varying degrees of injury and were transported to hospital.

Sindy Msimang of the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) said investigations are ongoing, with no conclusive cause identified yet.

“It’s too early to determine the exact reason for the crash,” Msimang said. “The officer on scene noted that the tyres appeared to be in good condition, which may rule out a tyre burst. However, it’s still speculation at this stage — loss of control is a possible factor, but further analysis is needed.”

Authorities have cordoned off the area while forensic teams and crash experts continue to examine the wreckage.
