A serious crash involving a heavy-duty truck caused chaos on the M4 Southern Freeway near Merebank on Wednesday morning, resulting in the closure of the southbound carriageway.
The accident occurred shortly after 10:30am, prompting multiple emergency calls. ALS Paramedics arrived at the scene to find a truck overturned and lying on its roof, with the driver severely trapped inside the wreckage.
Emergency teams, including the eThekwini Fire Department and Redline Rescue, were swiftly dispatched to assist. While rescue personnel worked to free the driver, advanced life support paramedics stabilised him on-site. Once extricated, he was transported to Ahmed Al-Kadi Private Hospital for further medical care.
Two other occupants, travelling in a second vehicle involved in the crash, sustained moderate injuries. They were also stabilised at the scene and taken to a nearby hospital.
The M4 South remains closed at the Merebank offramp to allow for vehicle recovery and clean-up operations. The cause of the crash is not yet known, and the South African Police Service has launched an investigation into the incident.
