Electricity and Energy Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has unveiled new regulatory rules that will govern network charges for third-party energy transportation marking a significant step toward reforming South Africa’s energy market.

The updated framework outlines how private entities will be charged to transmit electricity through the national grid, a move the minister says is essential for adapting to the country’s evolving energy landscape.

While the final cost structure is still under development, the revised regulations are designed to encourage competition and efficiency in the sector. Once implemented, consumers will no longer be solely reliant on Eskom for electricity supply, creating opportunities for greater choice and market-driven service delivery.

“This is a critical reform that recognises the urgency of diversifying energy sources and enabling more players to contribute to the grid,” said Ramokgopa.

The changes are expected to accelerate private sector participation in electricity generation and distribution, supporting national efforts to stabilise the energy supply.
