A scholar transport driver has been arrested in the Mafefe area, outside Lebowakgomo, following allegations of raping a five-year-old learner.
Police report that the alleged sexual assaults occurred between January and March of this year. The incidents were brought to light when the child disclosed the abuse to her guardian.
According to police, the alleged rapes took place inside the scholar transport vehicle after other learners had been dropped off. Police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba stated that the suspect will face a charge of rape when he appears in court next week.
"The suspect allegedly threatened the child not to report the incident, but she finally disclosed to her grandmother during the Easter weekend," Ledwaba explained. "A case of rape was opened and transferred to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for further investigation. The suspect was subsequently arrested on Thursday."
