Five suspects have been arrested in Modderfontein, east of Johannesburg, for allegedly hijacking a truck while dressed in police uniforms.

Authorities say the individuals were wearing Ekurhuleni Metro Police attire and SAPS reflector jackets when they intercepted a truck transporting solar batteries valued at approximately R5 million.

The truck driver, who had been kidnapped during the hijacking, was safely rescued by police. The vehicle and its cargo were also recovered.

Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed the arrests, stating:
“The suspects were intercepted immediately after hijacking the truck and kidnapping the driver. They now face charges of truck hijacking, kidnapping, possession of suspected stolen property, and impersonating police officers.”

Masondo added that the suspects will be profiled to determine whether they are linked to other serious or violent crimes. Investigations are ongoing.
