The community of Havenside is reeling from shock and heartbreak Prenolan Nicholas Samuel was gunned down in a brutal home invasion while reportedly trying to protect his mother. The incident unfolded early Wednesday morning, leaving his family traumatised and the neighbourhood in mourning.

According to Bayview SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Collin Chetty, three armed suspects entered the family’s yard on Turfwood Place at around 5am. “The suspects accosted a woman hanging laundry outside. Her son went to investigate and was shot multiple times by one of the suspects. He was rushed to Life Chatsmed Garden Hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries en route,” said Chetty.

Initial social media reports falsely claimed the entire family had been murdered, prompting ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson to clarify that only one person had been shot. “The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds. His parents were also on scene and were treated for trauma-related medical issues before being taken to hospital,” said Jamieson.

A relative, speaking anonymously, revealed that Samuel acted selflessly in his final moments, shielding his mother from the gunman. “He was shot in the chest and side after confronting the intruders. Prenolan grew up here. He was soft-spoken, kind-hearted, and never looked for trouble. At his funeral, even neighbours wept for him.”

The relative also revealed that Samuel had been studying in the field of forensics and was actively seeking employment. A dedicated community member, he volunteered at the Bayview Cheshire Home and was known for his generosity and compassion.

Neighbours highlighted ongoing concerns about crime in the area, pointing to the bushy terrain behind the home—providing a route to Bulbul Drive and Umlazi—as a hotbed for criminal activity. Despite the rising crime rate, residents praised local security companies for their continued efforts to curb it.

Samuel was also remembered as a deeply spiritual individual who held a yellow belt in karate and had planned to volunteer as a marshal at the upcoming Rising Sun AC Ultra Marathon. “He was a respectful and active young man. He loved his motorcycles, trained in karate religiously, and always helped others without hesitation,” a close source said.

His funeral took place on Saturday, with his cremation held at the Clare Estate Crematorium. The tragedy has sparked renewed calls for greater security and community vigilance in Havenside.
