Eastern Cape Education MEC, Fundile Gade, has reversed his decision to shut down Bergview College in Matatiele following controversy over the school’s handling of the alleged rape of a seven-year-old pupil, Cwecwe.
Authorities had initially planned to close the institution, citing concerns over its response to the incident. However, Bergview College challenged the closure in court, filing an urgent application to prevent it.
Court documents revealed that police are investigating four individuals as persons of interest—two taxi drivers, a school janitor, and a family member.
While the school will remain open, the case continues to draw scrutiny as authorities seek justice for the young victim.
