Motorists in KwaZulu-Natal have embraced the transition to cashless payments at motor licensing centres, according to the provincial Department of Transport. The new system, implemented on Tuesday, aims to curb corruption and fraud while enhancing security.
The shift to digital transactions follows a surge in cash-in-transit heists, which prompted the department to eliminate cash handling at licensing centres.
“We believe that embracing digital evolution will help us as the department to save every cent and ensure that we help fund programmes of service delivery for this democratic government,” said department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya.
Sibiya also revealed that the department collected R2.3 billion in the 2024/25 financial year. These funds have been redirected to the Treasury for allocation to critical sectors such as health, education, social development, infrastructure, and road construction.
The department remains confident that the move to cashless payments will enhance efficiency and transparency in service delivery.
