The principal of Bergview College in Matatiele, Eastern Cape, has provided a DNA sample as part of an ongoing investigation into the rape of a seven-year-old learner in October 2024. This follows confirmation from Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on Monday, stating that the principal is one of three suspects under investigation.
The incident, which occurred at the independent school, has drawn significant concern from the Eastern Cape Education Department, leading to a deregistration notice being served to the school. The department criticized the principal’s apparent lack of cooperation with police investigations.
Vuyiseka Mboxela, spokesperson for Education MEC Fundile Gade, confirmed that a rape case was opened in October 2024, but no significant progress has been made. She expressed frustration with the principal’s reluctance to assist authorities.
On Friday, department officials served the school with the deregistration notice, which was acknowledged by school officials. The Department of Education has promised to assist with the placement of affected learners at other schools.
Meanwhile, Helen Sauls-August, Speaker of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature, welcomed recent updates in the investigation, particularly the collection of DNA samples from all suspects.
“This is an important milestone that will aid in identifying the perpetrators and securing justice for the victim, known in the media as Cwecwe,” said Sauls-August. She also called for suspension of the suspects from school duties until the investigation concludes.
“We urge law enforcement agencies to use all available legal tools to expedite investigations and bring those responsible to justice,” she added.
